Breaking Down Barriers opened its doors on February 25, 1985
BDB is one of 27 Independent Living Centres across Canada and has been accredited by Independent Living Canada since 2006.
BDB provides the following programs: Independent Living Skills, Peer Support, Information and Referral, Self- Managed Attendant Care, Worklinks Employment Program, Accessibility Consultation, and disability awareness training and the Community Companion Network.
BDB is currently funded by: Independent Living Canada; North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network; Ministry of Health, Long Term Care (Direct Funding Program); Service Canada; United Way of Greater Simcoe County; Town of Wasaga Beach; Town of the Blue Mountains; Clearview Township, County of Simcoe, Ontario Trillium Foundation and BDB fundraising campaigns and events.
BDB has 5 permanent full time staff positions. BDB has one part time contract staff for June 2014 – June 2016.
BDB is supported by volunteers who give their time as Board members, help out with board committees, fundraising events, office work and programs. These volunteers contribute approximately 1200 hours of their time annually.
BDB is governed by an 11 member a voluntary board of directors from across the Georgian Triangle.
